About Saturn

Saturn is the 6th planet in our solar system and is the planet that can be most visibly seen with the human eye. Saturn is a gas giant, made of mostly hydrogen and helium and is considered the ‘jewel’ of the night sky because of its spectacular array of rings, founded by Christiaan Huygens.

Saturn has been known since ancient times and is named after the Roman god of agriculture and wealth, Saturnus. The Greek equivalent was Cronos, the father of Zeus/Jupiter. Saturn is also the root word of the English word Saturday. Four robotic space crafts from Earth have visited Saturn—Pioneer 11, Voyager 1, Voyager 2 and Cassini.
