About Mars

Mars is the fourth planet away from our sun and it is also known as the second-smallest planet in our solar system. This Martian planet can be seen with the naked-eye.

Mars is named after the Roman God Of War, Ares. It is  also identified as the 'Red Planet' as it appears red in colour due to iron-rich minerals in its surface. The Egyptian civilisation called it 'Her Desher' ('the red one') and the Chinese called it 'the fire star'.

The low atmospheric pressure on mars is 1% less than earth , due to this liquid, such as water does not exist. But valleys, gullies and channels that are visible on Mars could prove that once water flowed on this now-desert planet depending on thickness of its atmosphere.

Mars’ radius is 3,390 km. It is 227.9 million km away from the sun. To orbit the sun, it takes 678 days. The length of its days is 1 day and 37 minutes.    Its orbit period is 687 days (1.9 years); it has 322 more days than Earth’s orbit.
